Meet Marcel van Buuren

Marcel van Buuren has been part of Kanon for over 30 years, helping develop custom loading arm solutions trusted around the world. Today, he serves as Technical Director. What began as an internship in 1989 turned into a long and successful career focused on engineering excellence and building strong partnerships.

Initially, Marcel started in the engineering department, working during summer breaks. Later, he returned to complete his graduation project from a commercial perspective. As a result of this experience, Marcel officially joined Kanon full-time in 1991. Since then, he has grown alongside the company, taking on more responsibilities as Kanon expanded.

In his current role, Marcel focuses on much more than just technical output. A large part of his day is spent guiding team members and supporting their development. According to Marcel, real leadership is about empowering others to thrive and take ownership. For example, a U.S.-based client needed loading arms installed on a shared jetty, but available space pushed the installation point 25 meters inland. While competitors dismissed it as impossible, Kanon took a different approach.

Through detailed analysis and innovative design, Kanon developed loading arms with a 32-meter reach—something never done before. Today, seven of those arms are operating successfully. “We built what others said couldn’t be done,” Marcel explains.

LOOKING AHEAD

Throughout the years, Marcel has worked on projects ranging from petrochemicals to food and beverage. “There are too many highlights to mention,” he says, “but each one has brought new challenges and insights.” This versatility makes Kanon agile and resilient in a rapidly changing market.

Looking ahead, Kanon continues to innovate.
