Kanon x Shell: Overhaul Case

A 35-year collaboration

For more than three decades, Kanon Loading Equipment and Shell Netherlands Chemie have built a strong and reliable partnership focused on ensuring the performance and efficiency of loading arms. Their collaboration is rooted in a shared commitment to quality, safety, and innovation. Over the years, they have successfully completed numerous projects that highlight their combined expertise and mutual respect. This enduring relationship continues to thrive, demonstrating the value of their joint efforts in optimizing operational performance.

Overhaul at Moerdijk

In 2023, a vital loading arm, operational since 2002, underwent a complete overhaul at Shell’s Moerdijk facility. With frequent coupling due to smaller ships, loading arms at the site endure significant wear. Shell’s policy of revising all loading arms every 20 years ensures safe and efficient operation. Kanon played a crucial role in this extensive revision, completing the process within three months. The refurbishment ensures the loading arm is now prepared for years of reliable service.

Planned and Efficient Execution

Preparation was key to the success of this project. Marlon Gret, Shell’s Field Supervisor Equipment, oversaw the process, ensuring all documentation, permits, and pre-revision activities were in place before the overhaul began.

Kanon followed a structured approach. The arm was first inspected on-site, then transported to Kanon’s workshop for disassembly, cleaning, and a detailed inspection. Critical components, such as swivels, hydraulic cylinders, and bearings, were either refurbished or replaced. The arm was sandblasted, repainted, and reassembled to meet Shell’s latest standards.

Focus on Safety

Safety remained a priority throughout the overhaul. Shell and Kanon conducted risk assessments, including a Task Risk Analysis (TRA), to minimize hazards during disassembly and reinstallation. Given the flammable and explosive nature of Shell’s products at Moerdijk, strict adherence to safety protocols was essential.

After reinstallation, the loading arm underwent a comprehensive Site Acceptance Test (SAT) to confirm functionality and compliance. Once successfully completed, the arm was certified ‘Mechanical Complete’ (MC) and entered the ‘Ready for Start-Up’ (RFSU) phase, ensuring a seamless return to operation.

A strong partnership

The successful completion of this overhaul further reinforces the trust and expertise that define the 35-year relationship between Kanon and Shell. By maintaining an efficient revision process while prioritizing quality, Kanon continues to support Shell’s operational performance. With the refurbished loading arm back in service, both companies look forward to future projects that will further strengthen their collaboration.
